 Named for Beatrice Teitel

Beatrice Terrace was named in honour of Beatrice Teitel, also known as Bertha Stone, the grandmother of Leslie Stern, one of Entre Nous Femmes Housing Society's founding members. Beatrice immigrated from Poland as an infant in the early 1900s, receiving the name Bertha at the border but later choosing her own name and birthday. Married at 16 and a grandmother before 40, she was known for her warmth, joy, and captivating storytelling. Her family cherished her tales, especially those about her five sisters sharing a bed and her father’s runaway bakery horse. Beatrice passed away in 1984, just as Entre Nou Femmes Housing Society was getting established. Leslie believes her grandmother’s spirit of light, laughter, and love lives on within the walls of Beatrice Terrace.
